Ashanti Bar elects new executives

Kumasi, Nov.12, GNA – Members of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Bar Association have appealed to the government and the Judicial Council to expedite action on the establishment of the proposed Court of Appeal in Kumasi to serve the northern sector of the country. At a meeting in Kumasi on Friday, the members said the continued delay in the execution of the project was raising serious concerns among the general public, in view of the risk and cost involved in travelling from the northern sector of the country to Accra to seek redress at an Appeal court.

The meeting coincided with the election of new regional executives for the association.

Mr Anthony Osei-Poku was elected unopposed as the new regional chairman. He succeeded Dr A.B.K Anane who did not contest for the second term after his three-year tenure.

Mr Yaw A. Boafo was elected the new regional secretary when he polled 26 votes to beat Mr Stephen Opong, who had 18 votes. Mr. Kwabena Asante-Krobea, former secretary, Mr. Samuel Bofa Donkor and Mr Francis Koffie were elected unopposed as Vice chairman, treasurer and social secretary respectively while Mrs Sarah Aryee was also elected unopposed as the assistant secretary. Mr Dennis Agyei was elected as the representative of the senior members while Mr Kwame Owusu Sekyere was elected to represent the junior members on the executive.

Speaking after the elections, Mr Osei-Poku, the new chairman, pledged to send a delegation to meet the Chief Justice to discuss the current situation of the proposed Court of Appeal in Kumasi and other general matters affecting the administration of Justice in the region. He said the new executive would hold discussions with judges and registrars in the region to discuss ways that would help ensure efficient and speedy trial of cases in the region. Mr Osei-Poku, pledged to initiate measures to revive the law library in Kumasi and replenish it with books to promote research and learning by the members.
