Workers Dismissed For Going On Strike

Over thirteen workers of Aviance Company Limited at the Kotoka International Airport have been dismissed for embarking on an industrial action. Management has also suspended their union executives. The workers, led by their union executives, staged a three-hour strike last month to demand an upward adjustment of salaries by 60 per cent and better conditions of service.

They rejected management?s offer of 15 per cent increment and a further 25 per cent brokered by the Trades Union Congress, on their behalf. The workers claim that their management has resorted to victimization of staff through suspensions and dismissals. A Labour Consultant and Publicists of the Aviance Workers, Ato Kondua, told newsmen that the dismissals are illegal and can lead to more chaos.

?It is unfortunate that in this country we have laws to protect workers and yet not even their representative at the TUC was able to defend them. What is also happening is that for crying out aloud about the inhumanities being meted out to the worker of Aviance, they are using means to victimize these people.

Now what is happening at the moment is that there seem to be some agitations on the ground. I have notified several people who are connected to the security of the state about the situation that it is important that we diffuse this situation before it explodes. And with these leaders out, there is some state of uncertainty and it is management that is creating that insecurity,? he said.
