Kumasi East Rotary donates to Bantama schools

Kumasi, Nov 10, GNA – The Kumasi East Rotary Club on Thursday donated plastic washing bowls, detergents and towels to the Bantama cluster of schools in a bid to promote personal hygiene in first cycle schools.

The donation is also part of the club’s efforts to help stem cholera outbreak in the metropolis.

Professor S.O. Asiama, President of the Club who presented the items, appealed to school children, teachers and food vendors to practice personal hygiene in order to prevent contracting cholera which is a disease caused by filth and unsanitary environmental conditions. He said the Rotary Club has over the years expressed concern and demonstrated it by assisting in the area of education and health, which are very crucial in the development of every nation. Prof Asiama, who is the Provost of the College of Architecture of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), said school children have been targeted first in their attempt to prevent cholera because they can be used as conduits to spread the hygiene message fast.

Mrs Joyce Newell, Chairman of the International Community of Rotary in Ghana, called on food vendors to see themselves as people who can easily help in the spread of the disease and endeavour to practice personal hygiene by washing used bowls well with clean water and detergents. Mr Omenako Danquah, Bantama sub-metro director of education, who received the items thanked the Rotary Club for the donation and promised to distribute them to the schools under the sub-metro.
