Plan Ghana to embark on Eye Screening and De-worming of children

Mankessim (C/R), Nov. 3, GNA – The Mankessim Programme Area of Plan Ghana, a child oriented Non-Government Organisation (NGO) has embarked on some activities to promote the health of school children. The activities, which were being undertaken in collaboration with the District Directorates of Ghana Education Service in Mfantseman and Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese Districts, are eye screening, ear inspection to detect hearing problems and de-worming.

Mr Jacob Turkson, Programme Area Manager, said about 12,338 pupils and teachers in the 42 Plan Ghana assisted schools would benefit from the exercise, which would be done in two phases. The first phase was in October 2005 while the second would be in December 2005.

He said the programmes were initiated to improve the health of the pupils to promote learning.

Mr Samuel Cudjoe, School Health Education Programme Co-coordinator of the NGO, appealed to health and education authorities in the two districts to co-operate in the implementation of the programmes. Mr Reemans Osei Bonsu, Mfantseman District School Health Education Programme (SHEP) Co-coordinator, commended Plan Ghana for creating an enabling condition for pupils to learn and called on stakeholders in education to support the organisation.
