KATH to train doctors in radiology and imaging

Kumasi, Nov.01, GNA – The Radiology Department of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), in Kumasi, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with an Academic and Medical Centre in Amsterdam to undertake research and training of doctors in radiology and imaging. Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare, Chief Executive Officer of KATH, announced this at the opening session of a four-day post-graduate course in abdominal ultrasound for 30 selected doctors from KATH and other regional hospitals in the northern sector of the country in Kumasi on Tuesday.

The course is being organized by KATH in collaboration with the Centre, Philips Medical Systems and F. Malawi Company. Dr Nsiah-Asare said KATH currently had one of the modern state of the art Computerised Tomography (CT) Scan in the country and three doctors were under radiology training to man the unit. He said the hospital had planned to have ultrasound facilities in each of its wards as a means to improve health care delivery. The Chief Executive Officer said the hospital would require about six additional radiologists when the Emergency and Trauma Centre now under construction was completed.

Dr Nsiah-Asare said the training course would help build capacities of the doctors in ultrasound management and commended the organisers for the support.

He appealed to the participants to endeavour to impart the knowledge acquired to their colleagues.

Dr Nsiah-Asare pledged the commitment of the hospital management to continue to explore avenues to train and build capacities of its doctors and staff to achieve its vision of becoming a centre of excellence in health care delivery in future.
