Ghanaians urged to entrench multi party democracy

Accra, Oct. 26, GNA – A new Non-Governmental Organisation, Liberal Democrats Forum (LDF), has been formed to assist statutory institutions to educate Ghanaians on the need for good governance and multi-party democracy.

The main aim of the group, whose membership includes students in tertiary and second cycle institutions, is to protect the country’s fledgling democracy, the organisers said.

Mr Michael Ampong, Chairman of the LDF, noted that the country’s democracy was fragile and needed energetic and exuberant youth to protect and develop it to standards comparable to what pertained in developed nations.

He said there was the need for a collective responsibility and resolve of all Ghanaians, irrespective of their individual political leanings or interest, to facilitate the desire of entrenching multi-party democracy and good governance.

“The formation of LDF has been necessitated by the urgent need to help nurture and develop and protect our fledgling democratic culture.” He mentioned poverty, high illiteracy rate and apathy towards political activities as issues that were hindering Ghana’s democracy. Mr Ampong appealed for support to enable the Forum to become an effective and efficient tool to sustain the democratic culture being nurtured.

Earlier a group called Liberal Democrats confronted the executives of the Liberal Democrats Forum on the use of the name “Liberal Democrats”.

Explaining the issue to the GNA, Mr Ampong said his group had been duly registered as an NGO and that the name Liberal Democrats was not the same as Liberal Democrats Forum.
