Police Administration punishes eight personnel

Accra, Oct. 23, GNA – The Police Administration on Sunday said it had instituted disciplinary action against eight personnel of the Service for unprofessional conduct that tended to bring the Service into disrepute.

A statement from the Public Affairs Unit of the Service and signed by DSP David Eklu said two out of the eight, including a female Sergeant, were found to have misconducted themselves during the selection of personnel for the African Union Peacekeeping Mission in Darfur, Sudan.

For their punishme nt, the Policewoman Sergeant has had her rank reduced to Corporal, whilst Constable Eric Avie of the Police Headquarters has been summarily dismissed.

Two other policemen, namely Corporal Elvis Sampong of Abura Dunkwa Police Station and Lance Corporal Evans Osei Adams of Twifu Hemang Police Station have been interdicted to enable investigations to be conducted into their alleged involvement in illegal chain sawn timber operations.

Four other Police personnel, two Sergeants, one Corporal and one Lance Corporal from the Police Headquarters and Accra South West (Kaneshie Division are also facing service enquiry for the use of a Police vehicle to convey sawn lumber without authority. The statement explained that the disciplinary actions were part of the Police Administration’s measures to check various acts of unprofessional conduct among Police personnel.

“Whilst adopting these stringent measures, the Police Administration will equally reward personnel who exhibit high professional conduct,” the statement said.

It was in this vein that nine Police Officers who displayed exceptional acts of bravery, commitment and professionalism in the discharge of their duties in Tema and Accra had cash awards totalling 47 million cedis, whilst another officer was given a certificate of commendation and an incremental jump in rank, the statement added.
