Accra, Oct. 20, GNA – The 2004 Ghana Human Development Report (GHDR) says the country is unlikely to achieve the target of halving the proportion of people suffering from hunger as stated under the UN Millennium Development Goals.
Ghana is also not likely to eliminate gender disparity in primary and junior secondary education by 2005 as well as reduce maternal mortality ratio by three quarters by 2015.
The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which ranges from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015. The Report said the country however, had the potential to achieve equal access for boys and girls to senior secondary schools by 2015 and has the potential to reduce under-five mortality ratio by three quarters by 2015.
The country also has the potential to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015 while dealing comprehensively with debt reduction in the long term.
The Report said Ghana had the potential to halve the proportion of people below the poverty line by 2015 and achieve universal access to primary education.
The country also has the probability to halve the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water by 2015.
