Cholera Kills 3 In Kumasi

Kumasi, Oct.15, GNA – Six people have died from a reported outbreak of cholera in the Kumasi Metropolis, Dr. Joseph Oduro, Kumasi Metrpolitan Director of Health Services announced on Friday. The six, he said, died at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the SDA hospital at Kwadaso.

Making this known at the third quarter review meeting of the metro health directorate in Kumasi, Dr Oduro said there have been about 100 reported cholera cases in the metropolis in the last three days. He attributed the outbreak to the recent heavy rains and the insanitary conditions in some areas of the metropolis and appealed to the people to ensure proper hygiene and environmental clealiness all the time.

He said adequate vaccines had been sent to the various hospitals to ensure that patients were treated to help salvage the situation. Dr Oduro announced that, the metropolitan directorate of health services has since January to September this year recorded 92 cases of maternal deaths and appealed to mothers to attend antenatal clinics regularly so as to help reduce such cases.

The metro director of health services said within the same period 913 cases of tuberculosis, 710 cases of HIV/AIDS, 34 cases of Oncho and other diseases were also recorded.

Dr Oduro therefore, challenged the health personnel to work as a team and improve the health delivery in the area.

He commended the efforts of the private sector in the health delivery and hoped they would continue to render invaluable services towards the promotion of health delivery.

Mrs Theresa Otuo-Acheampong, Deputy Director of Nursing Services on her part, emphasized the importance of data collection in the health delivery and appealed to the personnel to provide the directorate with up-to-date data on diseases.
