Tamale, Oct.13, GNA – The Centre for Human Rights Education and Advocacy, a Tamale based NGO has appealed to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to conduct private examinations for Junior Secondary School students on the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Mr. Issah Mahmudu, Executive Director of the NGO who made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said lack of such an opportunity had caused many students to end their education abruptly. He said the mass drove of the youth into the cities in search of white colour jobs could be curtailed if such an opportunity was put in place to allow students who failed in some subjects to re-write them.
The NGO had initiated programmes in schools within Tamale Metropolis to educate students to understand the relationship between human rights and responsibilities as well as helping them to improve their communication skills in advocacy.
Mr. Mahmudu said out of the programmes, the NGO realised that most of the students could not differentiate privileges from human rights and that education was a right and not a privilege.
He called on school authorities to collaborate with old student associations to teach students about the achievements and success of their schools to instil discipline among students.
