Mines pollutes water source of communities

Kade, Oct 05, GNA – Gold mining activities of the Med Mining Company at Dokyi in the Kwaebibrim District had been found to be polluting the Pram River that is the main source of water for communities living along the banks of the river.

Mr Yaw Yiadom Boakye, the District Chief Executive, said the attention of the company had been drawn to it.

He told a meeting of the district assembly at Kade on Monday that the company has agreed to build some hand-dug wells for the communities.

Mr Boakye reiterated the assembly’s commitment to ensuring that a lasting solution was sought for the problem as soon as possible. Mr Robert Tetteh, the Assembly member for the Pramkese/Twum-Wusu Electoral Area, said the operations of the company since 1999 had killed most of the fishes in the river, especially those with scales. He appealed to the assembly to ensure that the company lived up to its promise to provide alternative water supply for the affected communities.
