New Syllabus for ACCA students

Accra, Sept. 30, GNA – Students taking the professional examinations of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) would, from December 2007 be assessed on a new syllabus to enable them to meet the changing demands of requisite skills needed in the performance of their jobs.

Mr. Gareth Owen, Senior Education Adviser, ACCA, said the change in the syllabus was in response to the need that ACCA maintained a lead role as a global accounting qualification.

The move is also to enable students to meet the intellectual requirements for the award of a degree and ensure that work experience is made an integral to gaining the qualification. Mr. Owen was presenting the key elements of the new syllabus at a conference for ACCA trainers from the West African sub-region.

The conference would allow the trainers to acquire new skills of teaching and to prepare their students towards the examinations. Mr. Owen said ACCA had received over 12,000 responses through its online survey with the majority of the people supporting the new qualification proposals in all key areas such as examination structure and content and assessment methods and practical experience requirements.

He said the new scheme would enhance the credibility of ACCA and exceed the requirements of regulatory and advisory bodies. However, Mr Owen, said ACCA would continue to hold consultations with key stakeholders and speed up work on the syllabus, practical experience requirements, online ethics module, accreditation framework for the award of exemptions, marketing material and IT systems to ensure that ACCA remained on track for delivering the qualification in 2007. Mr. Richard Clarke, Director of Training said the workshop would provide trainers grounding in essential qualities of effective examination training.
