Fishermen fishing with lighting confronted

Saltpond (C/R), Sept 26, GNA – Some patriotic fishermen from Biriwa and Kormantse in the Mfantseman District have seized the gear of some fishermen from Elmina, who were using powerful electric bulbs, which is an unapproved method of fishing on the high seas.

The seized items included the head of a Yamaha outboard motor, a generator, electric bulbs and a fuel jerry can.

Nana Kweku Abakah, Chief Fisherman for Biriwa and Mr Kofi Sagu, Kormantse No. I Chief Fishermen’s linguist presented the items to the Mfantseman District Assembly for further action.

Mr Robert Quainoo-Arthur, District Chief Executive, directed that the case should be reported to the Police and advised fishermen who indulged in the practice to stop since it depleted marine resources. He said the poor fishing season experienced this year could be attributed to such practices and said some fishermen from the district had vowed to confront those who adopted such unapproved methods. The DCE noted that such confrontation on the high seas could be dangerous and appealed to those who indulged in the practice to stop.
