Taxi driver fined for overloading

Twifo Praso (C/R), Sept 26, GNA – A 28-year-old taxi driver who carried nine passengers in his vehicle, including one in the boot of the car, was on Thursday fined 1.6 million cedis by a magistrate’s court at Twifo Praso.

Kobina Nyarko, who pleaded guilty to carrying excess passengers and exposing a human being to danger, would go to prison for one year in default.

The presiding magistrate, Mr Joseph Blay, attributed the high spate of motor accidents to indiscipline on the part of driver and warned that he would in future deal drastically with any driver brought before him for a similar offence.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector George Okine told the court that last Thursday police on patrol arrested Nyarko. The court also fined another taxi driver, 25-year-old Samuel Quainoo, 800,000 cedis for carrying six instead of five passengers in his vehicle.
