Aliu Mahama eulogises late Tijanniya Leader

Accra, Sept.20, GNA- Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama on Tuesday eulogised the late Muslim spiritual leader, Sheikh Abdullah Ahmed Maikano as a man whose love for Ghana motivated him to pray constantly for national peace and stability.

Sheikh Maikano, 77, the late leader of the Tijanniya sect and Former Imam of the Ghana Armed Forces, died on September 12, 2005 at the Tarkwa Government Hospital and has since been buried in line with Muslim tradition.

Alhaji Mahama, who was interacting with the family of the deceased, who visited the Castle, Osu to formally inform the Government about the death of Sheikh Maikano described him as a long time friend. He recalled the fond memory of the Sheikh Maikano in Tamale where he won admirers in Ghana and beyond due to his forthrightness. “As Muslims we can be called to eternity anytime and so let us pray to Allah to give him a peaceful rest,” he noted.

Alhaji Mahama pledged the commitment of Government to give the departed leader a befitting funeral.

Major Sheikh Seidu Adam, Imam of the Ghana Armed Forces and Leader of the delegation, said the funeral of Sheikh Maikano would be held at Prang in the Brong Ahafo on September 25 2005.

He described the death of the spiritual leader as a calamity but a great blessing.

Major Adam said late Sheikh Maikano resigned from the Army to concentrate on spiritual matters and did so excellently.
