60% of visa fraud cases involve varsity students

Director of the Police Criminal Investigations Department-CID, David Asante Apeatu says six out of every 10-visa fraud cases involve students of the country?s universities.

He said the British High Commission alone-recorded 1,200 of such cases, while US and the Canada recorded 70 and 13 cases respectively.

Mr Apeatu was speaking on the activities of the Visa Fraud Unit at the CID since its inception about a year ago.

He said the spate of students? involvement in visa fraud could affect the chances of others with genuine documents that apply to travel abroad.

The CID boss said the establishment of the unit has brought some sanity and applicants are submitting more genuine documents than in the past. As a result the number of reported cases of fraud by visa contractors had reduced.

Mr Apeatu dismissed claims that the police was assisting the embassies to deny applicants travel visas.
