CUA donates to Dzorwulu Special School

Accra, Sept. 16, GNA – Mr Tamba Gbessey, Deputy Head of the Dzorwulu Special School on Saturday asked Government to ensure a quick passage of the Disabilty Bill, which is currently before Parliament. He said the absence of a legislation to back people with disability such as student in special schools, had opened them to trauma, rejection and humiliation by the society.

Mr Gbessey was speaking when the Ghana Co-operative Credit Union (CUA) presented items worth 10 million cedis to the school. He said the students of the school, who are mentally retarded had talents that must be developed.

He said parental neglect sometimes contributed to mental retardation among the children, citing a six year-old child who had not slept for most part of the years because of parental neglect. “Her own is not sickness, she would be cured when conditioned. As she sees her friends sleeping she will adopt to it, and God willing she will recover, ” Mr Gbessey said. He appealed to parents to show love to children with disability no matter their condition. Mrs Veronica Bassaw, Head Mistress of the school, appealed to NGOS to assist the school as the school lack certain amenities such as bus, dormitories, beds and other infrastructure. Mr Samuel Safo Chairman of Accra Chapter CUA, said the Union was making the presentation as part of its 50th year celebration in the fight to alleviate poverty in the society. The items donated included a deep freezer, cartons of Milo, Milk and toilet rolls.
