Ghana to host Commonwealth Meeting

Accra, Sept. 15, GNA – Ghana is slated to host the African Regional meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) in 2006. The meeting would precede the 52nd Annual Meeting of the CPA in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
The CPA, made up of Parliaments in the various Commonwealth countries, is committed to strengthening parliamentary democracy around the globe.
Mr Felix Owusu-Adjapong, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, said these when he briefed the press in Accra on Thursday after returning from the 51st Annual meeting of the CPA in Fiji. He said the business community in the country should take advantage of the regional conference to be held next year by showcasing Ghana to the outside world.
Mr Owusu-Adjapong said during the Fiji meeting participants touched on various issues related to achieving the targets set under the Millennium Development Goals.
On HIV/AIDS, he said, the meeting noted that the poor were more susceptible to the epidemic and there was the need to create wealth for everybody to ensure that people were empowered to deal with the scourge. The Majority Leader said the issue on how to get the developed countries committed to debt reduction by ensuring that developing countries did not get into debt also came up for discussions.
On fair trade, he said there was agreement that each country had a role to play in ensuring fair trade among partners.
