Volta Region leads in child labour- Mrs Ofori

Ho, Sept. 14, GNA – Volta Region is leading in the case of child labour in the country with 33.2 per cent according to Ghana Child Labour Survey 2000.

This was disclosed by Mrs Stella Ofori, an Official of the Child Labour Unit (CLU) of the Ministry of Manpower, Youth and Employment at a District Consultative Meeting for Districts in the region at Ho. She said the high incidence of child labour in the region was due to child trafficking, prevalent at Kpandu, Gemeni Denu and the Trokosi system (ritual servitude) in the Ketu, Keta, North Tongu and South Tongu districts.

Mrs Ofori said the situation had given rise to endemic poverty and a ” large pool of illiterate citizens that has caused unemployment and under-employment”.
