Accra, Sept 13, GNA – The Ministry of Women and Children (MOWAC) on Tuesday bemoaned on the high dropout rate of girls in school in spite of the improvement in their enrolment within the last couple of years. Mrs Marain Tackie, a Director at MOWAC), who was launching a ‘School Enhancement Programme’ in Accra, called for concerted efforts by all communities to ensure that girls remained in school.
“Despite efforts made at increasing women’s education, women still lag behind in educational attainment and in training because of heavy workloads and the lack of gender friendly environment,” she said. The school Enhancement Project is an intervention geared towards the enhancement of students’ performance in schools through the tapping of talents of pupils.
The programme was initiated by the ‘New Approach to Education Research’ (NATER), a Non-Governmental Organisation which is under the umbrella of All for Christ Mission Church.
Mr Michael Otiboe, Director NATER, said the nation’s educational efforts were plagued with doubts and uncertainties, especially with the poor academic performance by pupils and students in the rural areas. He said a recent study had revealed that the educational system was not fulfilling the needs and aspiration of most communities.
