C’wealth Foreign Ministers to meet in New York

Accra, Sept. 13, GNA – Commonwealth Foreign Ministers will meet in New York on Friday September 16, this year to discuss political and trade issues.
The meeting would coincide with the United Nations High Level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly, which would offer world leaders the opportunity to review progress of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
A statement issued on Tuesday, by the Communications and Public Affairs Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, said the Commonwealth Secretary General Mr Don McKinnon, would address the UN General Assembly.
It said that the Commonwealth Secretary General would advance the Commonwealth’s position on the MDGs and other issues addressed in the recent Report of the UN Secretary General.
It said, “The MDGs in particular are central to our own efforts in the Commonwealth to create a better life for our citizens”, adding that, “progress on them so far leaves much to be desired”.
The statement said trade issue would include prospects for the Doha Development Round and the forthcoming meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Trade Ministers, in Hong Kong.
It said the follow up to the meeting of the ten-year Barbados Plan of action on Small Island Developing State held in Mauritius last year was also on the agenda.
