Akuafo Hall Organises symposium

Accra, Sept. 4, GNA – The Akuafo Hall of the University of Ghana would on Tuesday September 13 organise a symposium as part of activities marking its Golden Jubilee, which began July 23, this year. The event on the theme: “The Ghanaian Farmer, the backbone of Ghana’s Economy” is scheduled to take place at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Hall.

A statement issued by the National Planning Committee signed by Mr. Kofi Agyemang indicted that the Committee would be launched on the day of the symposium.

The lead speaker would be Dr. Ishmael Yamson, Chairman of the University of Ghana Council and former Chairman of Unilver, who will talk from the perspective of an Economist and a businessman. Other speakers would include Professor Asebey Berko, Department of Nutrition, Dr Daniel Bruce Sarpong an Agricultural Economist. According to the statement, the symposium would serve as a stimulus for the public and institutions connected to agriculture and industry to come to grips with the immense contribution farmers had made and are still making to improve the economy.

Other programmes are as follows, October 11, lecture on the premises of the University of Ghana followed by an outreach tour to Oboom in the Ga District in the second week.

There would also be Akuafo Industry and Technology (AKINTECH) Fair and the launch of the Akufo Hall of Excellence Website to foster interaction with Alumni and students.

Akuafo Hall was established in 1953 and the first batch of students moved into residence in October 1955 and officially commissioned by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah in 1956.

The Hall was named after farmers of Ghana for their meritorious and generosity in donating a seed money for the then Government to establish the University of Ghana, as the colonial masters were only prepared to build a single University in Ibadan for West Africa.

The statement urged alumnae to offer support and cooperation to give a boost to the celebration, which marks the 50th anniversary of the hall.
