ABUJA, May 8 (Reuters) – Ghana’s President Jerry Rawlings on Saturday ended a three-day official visit to Nigeria during which he joined outgoing military ruler General Abdulsalami Abubakar on his farewell tour, Nigerian officials said.

“Rawlings was seen off at the airport this afternoon by the Head of State,” a presidency official told Reuters in the capital Abuja.

Both leaders inspected a number of government projects during the visit, including Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria, Ikot Abasi on the southeast coast, which has a working relationship with Ghana’s Volta Aluminium Company.

Rawlings also joined Abubakar on trips to the southern Rivers State and northern Niger State.

Abubakar is scheduled to step down in favour of President-elect General Olusegun Obasanjo on May 29 to end years of military rule in Africa’s most populous country of 108 million people.
