CPP youth call for renaming of public places

Kumasi, Aug. 19, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Youth League of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has called on the government to rename all important national and public edifices after illustrious sons and daughters of the country who had worked hard to achieve international reputation.

According to the youth, such a measure would boost the image of the country and help attract tourists into the country to increase national revenue.

In a statement issued in Kumasi on Thursday and signed by Mr Akwasi Bosompem Boateng, Ashanti regional youth secretary of the party, the youth reiterated the call on the government to rename the Kotoka International Airport after Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana.

The statement said Ghana could emulate some African countries such as South Africa and Kenya, which had used the names of their international heroes to attract tourists into their countries and thereby boosting the tourism sector.

It called for the naming of the proposed Kumasi International Airport after Mr Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General and the Asafo interchange, which is currently under construction after Otumfuo Osei Tutu 11 to “reflect a dynamic origin and centre of a rich African cultural royal heritage and unity.”

The statement also called on the government to institute measures to improve conditions at the country’s prisons to enhance the dignity of prisoners.
