2005 World Summit to be held in New York

Accra, Aug. 11, GNA – The 2005 World Summit is to be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York between September 14 and 16 this year.

More than 170 Heads of State and Governments would attend the Summit, which is based on a set of proposals outlined in March by the United Nations Secretary General, Busumuru Kofi Annan in his report “Larger Freedom.”

Subjects for the Summit include freedom from want, freedom from fear, freedom to live in dignity, strengthening the United Nations among other things.

A statement the United Nations Department of Public Information issued in Accra on Thursday said the essence of this “once-in-a-generation” opportunity was to take bold decisions in the areas of development, security, human rights and reform of the United Nations.

It would be the largest gathering of world leaders in history, the statement said.
