GES trains teachers for three northern regions and Afram Plains

Tumu, Aug 08, GNA – The Ghana Education Service (GES) has admitted a total 4,977 untrained teachers into eight training colleges to be given professional training.

This is part of solving perennial shortage of teachers in the three northern regions and the Afram Plains District in the Eastern Region. The programme is known as Untrained Teachers Diploma in Basic Education (UTIDBE)and those admitted were made up of 3,011 men and 1,966 female women.

Mr Michael Nsowah, the Acting Director General of the GES, said this during the second residential face-to-face meeting with some of such students, numbering 468, at the Tumu Training College. The students were admitted from Sissala East, Sissala West, Lawra and Jirapa/Lambussie districts.

Mr Nsowah said the programme was launched as part of the government’s poverty reduction programme and therefore would not allow a few people to maximize profits at their expense. He appealed to district assemblies and non-governmental organisations to sponsor the trainees.

Mr C.K. Gyan, the Principal of the Tumu Training College, commended Action Aid Ghana and Plan Ghana for supporting most of the students in the two Sissala districts.

He appealed to the students to exhibit maturity by appreciating the government’s efforts aimed at improving their status.
