Malaria cases increase in Techiman

Techiman, Aug 01, GNA – Malaria cases have upped in Techiman municipality as 18,825 cases were recorded within the first six months of the year as against 15,463 recorded the same period last year. Mr Henry Offei-Akoto, Municipal Health Director, said this at the mid-year performance review of the health directorate in Techiman. Some 100 participants drawn from public and private health institutions, stakeholders in health education, media personnel, non-governmental organizations, traditional birth attendants and community-based surveillance volunteers attended the review Mr Offei-Akoto attributed the rise in the cases to the monitoring and reporting of the disease by 16 health facilities as against four previously.

He said the disease accounted for 38.7 percent of outpatient department (OPD) cases this year as against 48.87 percent recorded last year.

Mr Osei-Akoto said 12 re-treatment centres for mosquito nets have been established in the municipality and appealed to health personnel to educate the people to patronize the centre to help control malaria.
