110 Million Cedis earmarked for malaria and AIDS

Winneba (C/R), Aug. 1, GNA – The Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Assembly has earmarked a total of 110 million cedis for the prevention of malaria and HIV AIDS in the 2005/2006 financial year. This was contained in a five-billion cedi annual budget proposals endorsed by members of the assembly at their two-day session at the National Sports College in Winneba.

More than 60 percent of funds expected for the implementation of proposed development projects and the day-to-day running of the assembly under the budget would be generated internally. Mr Robert Ekow Ghunney, Finance and Administration Sub-Committee Chairman for the assembly, who read the budget, said about 300 million cedis out of the amount, would be used to rehabilitate the Awutu-Bawjiase, Awutu-Bontrase and the Senya-Beraku markets, which are in a bad shape.

Mr. Ghunney also announced drastic cut in funding the poverty alleviation exercise following the inability of previous beneficiaries of the scheme to repay their debts totalling 650 million cedis.

Apart from the three markets, a chunk of the budget would go into rehabilitating government bungalows and health facilities in the district, as well as old school buildings and provision of more school furniture for public schools in the area. Mr. Ghunney charged members of the assembly to work hard to generate adequate funds to support the budget and stop putting all their hopes on the assembly’s share of the common fund. Aug. 01 05
