Parents urged to educate children

Kato (B/A), July 21, GNA – Mama Afia Siraa Ababio III, Queen mother of Kato in Berekum District in Brong-Ahafo on Wednesday implored parents to endeavour to invest in the education of their children to broaden their knowledge while nurturing them to become useful citizens. Nana Ababio noted with concern that poor parental control had resulted in the high rate of armed robbery cases, drug trafficking and the alarming rate of the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country. The queen mother who is also the chief executive officer of Queen Care International (Queen Caf), a non-governmental organization, based at Kato was addressing about 70 women on the theme, “Poor parenting” at a workshop organised by the NGO.

Nana Ababio under-scored the need for parents to be more vigilant and to show concern about the activities of their children in order not to expose them to unnecessary dangers that could ruin their future. Mrs. Juliana Amponsah, Regional Director of National Commission on Women and Development (NCWD) who was the guest speaker was not happy about how some parents allowed their children to roam about in the evenings instead of concentrating on their studies.

Mr. Patrick Yeboah, Nkoranza District Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) spoke against unnecessary discrimination among parents towards their children, adding that such negative attitude was a threat to peace and understanding within families.
