Kumasi, July 19, GNA – The Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC) has placed an injunction on the sale and development of lands at Kokobeng, near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The land has been at the centre of a long running dispute and become a major flashpoint of intermittent communal clashes.
The ban would remain in force until the determination of which of the stools has legitimate title to it. The Ankobea and the Kokobeng Stools are both claiming ownership of the said land.
Baffour Asare Owusu Amankwatia VI, Bantamahene, who presided over the meeting of the Council at which the decision was taken, warned that any breach by the parties would attract severe sanctions.
The dispute over the Kokobeng lands was before a Kumasi High Court and had to be withdrawn following an edict by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, on his ascension to the Golden Stool.
The Asantehene had directed that all matters relating to chieftaincy and land within his traditional jurisdiction should be taken out of the law courts and brought before him for amicable settlement. A committee appointed by the Otumfuo Osei Tutu to look into the disputed Kokobeng lands is expected to present its findings to the KTC soon for definitive pronouncement on the rightful ownership to be made.
