Accountant remanded for stealing SSNIT contributions

Accra, July 19, GNA – An accountant who allegedly collected Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions of his company’s employees but failed to pay the amount to the Trust on Tuesday appeared at a Circuit Court in Accra charged with stealing. Michael Asante, the Accountant, was remanded into prison custody by the court to reappear on August 3.

The facts of prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kofi Blagodzi are that Asante was an Accountant of Sacheal Pharmacy and Sanworld Limited, Accra.

The Prosecution said earlier this year, the Management of the two firms found their names published in the media as SSNIT defaulters who owed 26.8 million cedis.

The Firms’ Management, therefore, set up an audit team to investigate why they had been listed as defaulters. During investigations the team uncovered the theft and a complaint was lodged with the Police.

The Prosecution said when Asante was arrested he refunded 13.9 million cedis.
