Assemblyman expresses concern about poor sanitation at Kokote

Kokote (Ash), July 6, GNA – Mr Augustine Brefo, Assemblyman for Kokote, a suburb of Offinso, has expressed concern about the unsanitary conditions in the town.

He noted that the refuse dump in the town located near the market was becoming a mountain causing a lot of inconvenience and problems to the residents.

Mr Brefo, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency at Kokote on Monday, therefore appealed to the Offinso District Assembly to clear the refuse as a matter of urgency to avoid the outbreak of epidemic in the area. He was not happy about the poor drainage in the township, especially at the market and said that whenever there was heavy downpour the area became flooded and muddy as a result of choked gutters. The Assemblyman said the only toilet in the area also served other communities like Maase, Mpehi, Dome and Abuasu and that the situation had put a lot of pressure on it.

Mr Brefo urged the Assembly to complete the construction of a 20-seater water closet for the community. He also hinted that the Abuasu stream, which was the source of drinking water for the people had been polluted because of the dumping of refuse into it.

The Assemblyman announced that a task force had been set up to check people dumping refuses in the stream and warned that anybody caught in the act would be dealt with severely. Mr Brefo advised the residents to rekindle their communal spirit and to gear their efforts towards initiating more development projects to improve their living conditions. 6 July 05
