GES asked to promote technical and vocational education

Toase (Ash), July 4, GNA- Nana Asiama Poku-Afrifa II, Toasehene, has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to promote technical and vocational education in basic schools to help solve the mass youth unemployment in the country.

He said many workshops, which were put up for junior secondary schools by local communities for practical technical and vocational training, were lying idle without tools and equipment. Nana Poku-Afrifa, made these remarks at the first graduation of Cataab Vocational and Commercial Institute at Toase in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District on Saturday.

He expressed regret that the few JSS workshops, which were supplied with tools and equipment, have no qualified technical and vocational education teachers.

Nana Poku-Afrifa said: ”The situation has made the teaching of vocational and technical subjects unattractive and also kill the interest and enthusiasm of students even though they are endowed with potentials.”

He appealed to the GES and the Ministry of Education and Sports to urgently train more qualified teachers and provide the basic schools with technical and vocational training tools and equipment to promote practical education.

Madam Beatrice Appah, the Atwima-Nwabiagya District Director of Health Services, noted that illegal abortion had become a major cause of pre-mature deaths among young women and advised them to desist from pre-marital sex that could result in the practice.
