Wholesale promotion of teachers not motivating

Winneba (C/R) June 30, GNA- The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Professor Jophus Anamuah-Mensah has observed that the promotion of teachers on the long period of service was not motivating career advancement.

He said promotion must be base on excellent performance while appointments to key positions in the Ghana Education Service should be based on merit.

Professor Anamuah-Mensah was speaking at the second matriculation ceremony of Post Graduate students of the university, involving 235 students in Early Childhood Education.

He said the post graduate course was designed to produce a new crop of teachers and heads with the skills to promote innovation in public schools.

Prof. Anamuah-Mensah said the university had introduced a portfolio assessment system that allows school heads and teachers to document their professional competence to facilitate staff evaluation. “The University also intends to offer programmes aimed at training circuit supervisors in supervision and instructions as well as monitoring and evaluation to enable them manage their schedules effectively”, he said.

Prof. Anamuah-Mensah said if the government policy on Early Childhood education was to succeed, then all pre-school teachers should undergo the requisite training.

Mr Justice Nii Ayetey, Registrar of the University administered the Matriculation Oath to the students.
