Six hundred and sixty-six girls to benefit from AGSP

Sisipe, (N/R), June 29, GNA – About 666 girls in nine districts in the Northern Region would benefit from a 600 million-cedi United States Ambassador’s Girls Scholarship Programme (AGSP). The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is sponsoring the four-year project to support the retention of girls who would otherwise have no means of motivation to continue their education.

Dr Abubakr Al-Hassan, Chairman of School for Life (SFL), an NGO, said this at the launch of the project at Sisipe in the East Gonja District on Tuesday. He said the project is being accomplished through the award of scholarships and complementary mentoring that would inspire and encourage girls who are pursuing education.

The AGSP would supply school text and exercise books, mathematical sets, school uniform, footwear, bicycles and spare parts, food and cash to pay Parent/Teacher Association and other school levies. Forty girls from the East Gonja District benefited from the scholarship. Dr. Al-Hassan said through a successful collaboration with the Education Development Centre (EDC) an NGO, the SFL had become the key player in the implementation of the Education Equal for All Project that is being sponsored by USAID.

Under this project, the SFL methodology is being replicated in many more districts in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions. “The AGSP concept fits in very well with the mission of SFL as it seeks to address gender inequality”, he said.
