Retired Nurse jailed for causing abortion

Accra, June 29, GNA – An Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday sentenced a 50-year-old retired Nurse to six year’s imprisonment with hard labour, for causing illegal abortion and administering drugs to two women. The Nurse, Emmanuel Inkoom pleaded guilty.

On June 16, the Court deferred Inkoom’s sentence and remanded him into prison custody to reappear on Wednesday.

Sentencing Inkoom, the Court ordered the Police to destroy all implements retrieved from him.

The facts as presented by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Abichab Boye were that at about 1100 hours on June 6 2005, Police acting upon a tip off, broke into a house at Teshie Krobo in Accra and found Inkoom with two women, one of whom was lying down naked and unconscious. When the Police searched the room, they found a quantity of medicines and medical instruments.

The Prosecution said during interrogation, both women later told the Police that Inkoom gave them injections to cause abortion. The Police rushed the women to the Police Hospital, which admitted one of them and later discharged her.
