DVLA descends on unlicensed motorbike riders

Wa, June 27, GNA – Some owners of unregistered motorbikes in the Upper West have embarked on a criminal act of using numbers of old and spoiled motor bikes in order to evade tax and avoid registering their new motor-bikes. As a result, officials of Driving and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLD), the police and Customs, Excise and Prevention Services have embark on an exercise to arrest prosecute and make them to pay all the necessary monies.

Mr Divine Denoo, Regional officer of (DVLD) who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Wa said although they have on several occasions succeeded in outwitting them, frantic efforts would be adopted to arrest all of them. Mr Denoo said, “what they do know is that, we know the years every number was issued and if your motor-bike is new and you use an old number it is very easy to detect and we shall clamp down on them.” He said, apart from the fact that the government was losing revenue due to their reluctance to register their motor-bikes it as possible for them to use their bikes for criminal activities without any detection.

Mr Denoo said a lot of people were dying from motor-bike accidents, adding that an agreement had been reached among the security agencies to wage war against the illegal act of riding motor bikes without registration numbers, Customs documents, Licenses and helmets. On his part, Mr Yao Dela Tchorly, Wa Collection Commander of Customs, Excise and Preventive Service said all those caught would be made to pay penalties to dissuade other people from smuggling motor-bikes into the municipality.
