Court grants bail to five brothers, accomplices

Kumasi, June 22, GNA- A circuit court in Kumasi on Tuesday granted five brothers and their accomplice, five million cedis bail each with a surety each to be justified. Mohammed Awal, Musah Rashid, Melwani Rashid, Danjuma Rashid and Nashiru Abubakari, charged on four counts of conspiracy to commit crime, assault, death threat and causing unlawful damage, pleaded not guilty but Salisu Rashid pleaded guilty to the charges. They will re-appear on July 7.

Police Inspector Yaw Amofa told the court presided over by Mr Essel Mensah that, Yaw Kyei, the complainant, a mechanic and a resident of Suame-Tarkwa in Kumasi, shares a common boundary with the accused persons. The prosecutor said there had been a long-standing dispute between the accused persons and the complainant.

Inspector Amofa said at about 1700 hours on May 18, this year, the complainant and a bailiff from the AshTown District Court went to serve a writ of summons on the accused persons. He said the accused persons collected the document and asked the bailiff to tell them the basis for the writ.

Insp. Amofa said when the matter was explained to the accused persons, they became furious and beat the complainant. The complainant managed to free himself and together with the bailiff they fled by the taxi they came by. Inspector Amofa said the accused persons also boarded another taxi and chased the complainant and the bailiff and caught up with them in traffic and again beat the complainant. He said the bailiff and complainant reported the case at the Kumasi Central Police Station but when the accused persons were invited for questioning they refused to turn up.

Insp. Amofa said they accused persons instead destroy the complainant’s building estimated at eight million cedis and threatened to kill him and set his house ablaze, if he invited the police to arrest them. The prosecutor said on May 21, this year a police team arrested the accused persons.
