Play it fair- Ghanair workers

Government is being asked to be upfront in the next round of negotiations over severance pay for workers of Ghana Airways.

Talks for the workers severance pay are set to continue once they settle on a mediator out of a list to be given them by the National Labour Commission.

The workers referred the matter to the Labour Commission after negotiations with the management taskforce of the defunct airline hit a deadlock.

Already the Task Force is considering moves towards liquidating the airline after government authorized it.

News of the airline?s liquidation unsettled the workers who say their leaders were not informed about government?s intent, despite their queries on the matter.

The general secretary of the Ghana Transport and Chemical workers Union Emmanuel Mensah will lead negotiations when talks resume.

? We have followed a due process and we have gotten to a level where a third party will have to come in and this process is about appointing a panel of mediators,? he says.

He explained that this was before the issue of liquidation came in because the union had written to the chairperson of the commission about the issue of the mediator.

? What we want from the other party is the government task force representing government. We want fairness and government should set an example so that other investors? will know that we have provisions of the labour law which they need to follow,? he said.

He said it is the responsibility of government to pay workers of the defunct airline their severance pay.
