Awe Secondary/Technical School cries for electricity

Awe (U/E), June 15, GNA – Mr Paul Agyoriba Achana, the Headmaster of the Awe Secondary/Technical School near Navrongo in the Kassena-Nankana District, has appealed to the government to facilitate the connection of the school to the national electricity grid.

He said the school is one of the oldest schools in the district and was built in the 1950’s as a middle boarding school.

It was converted into a junior secondary school in the early 1970’s before being made a secondary/technical school.

He said electric poles had already been erected and needed only wiring from Saboro to the school, a distance of about two kilometres. Mr Achana said the school had seen no major renovation since its establishment resulting in deteriorating structures. The two student hostels built during the colonial days are no more in use. The kitchen, dining halls and six-unit residential quarters have had their roofs ripped off for over 20 years now.

The headmaster said the main four-unit classroom block is on an advice sheet to be demolished because the structure is bad, while there is no Home Science block to run the vocational programmes.

Mr Achana said apart from the electricity and infrastructure problem, the school had neither running water nor an official vehicle. He appealed to the district assembly, the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and NGOs to assist the school to rehabilitate the structures to enhance academic work. 15 June 05
