Koforidua, June 7, GNA – More than 100 children believed to have been trafficked from the Northern Region, were found to be engaged as farm hands at Mile 50, a farming village near Koforidua.
The children, some as young as about 10 years are working mainly on cassava farms, while the girls are serving as house helps. The Minister of Women and Children Affairs, Hajia Alima Mahama, who visited the community on Monday as part of a day’s working visit to the Eastern Region, described the situation as a “sad event”. “What will make a 10-year-old child to come down from the North to Koforidua in search of money”, she asked? And promise to investigate the issue.
Hajia Alima Mamaha said there was the need to send the children back home after the investigations to enable them to go to school. A farmer, Mr Baba Yaya, who had engaged most of the children on his farm, said, since their arrival he had stopped contracting the service of prisoners.
