Committee on disturbances at GSTS submits report

Takoradi, May 30, GNA – A five-member Committee of Inquiry set up by the Western Regional Director of Education to investigate students’ disturbances at the Ghana Secondary Technical Secondary (GSTS) in Takoradi, has submitted its report.

A press release from the Board of Governors of the School said after studying the report and the recommendations of the Committee, twenty-nine students had been sanctioned for their role in the riots. The statement said four of the students who were identified as ringleaders were to be summarily dismissed subject to final confirmation from the Director General of the Ghana Education Service.

The Board said: “Eleven other students who are to be suspended indefinitely would not be allowed to write the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) on the school campus”.

It said: “Thirteen others who are also to be suspended indefinitely would be allowed to write their SSSCE examinations on the school campus only on condition that they would be accompanied by their parents, guardians or responsible adults each day they have a paper to write”. The release said all other students who did not write the school’s examination paper on Thursday April 14 2005 were to come to the school with their parents and guardians to sign a bond of good behaviour on the re-opening day of the school.

It announced that the school would re-open for the third term of the 2004/2005 academic year on Monday June 6.
