Ejisu (Ash), May 21, GNA – The public has been advised against eating the carcasses of dead animals since they are likely to be infected with rabies.
Rabies is a debilitating deadly disease that infects animals, especially domestic pets but can be passed on to humans who eat the flesh of dead infected animals or suffer bites from the animals.
Officials of the Veterinary Services Department of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) gave the advice during a day’s awareness creation seminar organised for 50 assemblymen in the Ejisu-Juaben District who are in turn to educate the people in their respective communities on the disease to facilitate an on-going vaccination exercise.
Addressing the seminar, Dr M.K. Antwi, Ashanti Regional Veterinary Officer, asked the participants to negotiate with their traditional rulers to enact a by-law, which would empower veterinary officials to sanction those who refuse to vaccinate their dogs, cats and other domestic animals owing to the deadly nature of rabies.
He urged the people in the District to co-operate with officers when they come round to vaccinate their animals.
