Cape Coast, May 13, GNA – A circuit court at Cape Coast on Friday fined three drivers including one woman, a total of 1.5 million cedis for various traffic offences.
They were Kwasi Owusu, Ophelia Fynn and Daniel Asirifi. They all pleaded guilty and were convicted on their pleas and fined 500,000 cedis 700,000.00 cedis and 300,000.00 cedis respectively. Owusu and Ophelia would go to prison for six months and Asirifi, three months if they fail to pay the fines. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Oheneba Amoako-Boateng told the court presided over by Mr Mustapha Logoh, that on January 21, last year, Owusu was driving a Mercedes Benz bus from Tantri in Cape Coast towards Accra and on reaching a spot near ‘Green Hill’ also in Cape Coast, he ran into an on-coming vehicle being driven by Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, Omanhene of Oguaa Traditional Area.
He said the Omanhene sustained injuries and was rushed to the regional hospital, where he was treated and discharged, and a report was later made to the police and Owusu was arrested. Chief Inspector Amoako-Boateng said on November 22, last year, Ophelia was also driving a Nissan salon car from Siwdu towards Aquarium both in Cape coast, and on reaching a spot, she veered from her lane into the other lane, and ran into an on-coming Hyundai Excel taxicab injuring the driver and a passenger on board.
He said during police investigation, she failed to produce a driving license, insurance, road worthy certificate and also failed to send her vehicle to the police station for examination. He said MTTU officers arrested Asirifi last Wednesday at Ekon junction, near Cape Coast, when they intercepted his vehicle, which had a damaged windscreen, and an expired roadworthy certificate.
