Brave Cab Driver Foils Robbery

A taxi driver on Monday this week bravely foiled attempts by two alleged armed men who had seized his day’s sales to escape. He mounted a counter-attack by inflicting a deep cutlass wound on the head of one of the robbers.

His threat to sever the head of the other if he attempted to run away worked when the robber-turned-victim started shouting. His shouts attracted people to the scene and they effected the arrest of the robbers.

The robbers, Kwabena Opare, 22, and Stephen Tetteh, 24 are currently assisting the police in their investigations. According to the public relations officer of the Accra regional police command, ASP Jordan Quaye, the driver whose name is being withheld, said he was on his usual rounds at Kwashieman, an Accra suburb, when he was hired by the two men to New Achimota, around the Petroleum Flats.

He said on reaching their destination, one of them alighted and pretended to be removing money from his pocket to pay for the fare, but suddenly, he pulled a knife and pointed it at the driver. DSP Quaye said the robber then asked the driver to surrender the day’s sales to him or he would stab him to death.

The driver obliged by giving his weekly sales of almost ?600,000 to him. He said unknown to the two robbers, the driver had a cutlass under the seat of his car and so as soon as they attempted to leave the scene he attacked one of them by inflicting a deep cut on his head.

On seeing the plight of his colleague, the other robber attempted to escape but the taxi driver raised the cutlass and threatened to cut off his head if he dared to take to his heels. He then raised an alarm and residents promptly came and assisted him to arrest the robbers, who were handed over to the police.
