Renowned hydrological consultant arrives in Accra

Accra, May 11, GNA – Dr Robert Moran, a renowned American Geo-chemical and Hydrological Consultant and Specialist, would arrive in the country on May 14 for a weeklong working visit.

Mr Moran would help to train residents of mining communities in the use of simple equipment for water analysis.

A statement signed by Mr Daniel Owusu-Koranteng, Executive Director, Wassa Association of Communities Affected by Mining (WACAM), said Dr Moran’s visit is at the invitation of WACAM, a Ghanaian nongovernmental organisation (NGO), operating in mining communities.

Dr Moran, with 29 years of domestic and international experience in conducting and managing projects for private investors, industrial clients, tribal and citizen’s group is expected to lead public discussions on mining and its consequences at the Teachers’ Hall in Accra on May 16.

Topics to be discussed include mining and processing, effects of cyanide spillages, mine enclosures, acid drainage issues, citizen’s approval of mining and long term financial issues relating to mining”. The statement said.

Dr Moran’s technical expertise involves water quality, geo-chemistry of natural and contaminated waters and sediments as related to mining, nuclear fuel cycle sites, industrial development, geo-chemistry resources, hazardous wastes and water supply development. He has significant experience in using remote sensing to analyse natural resources issues and has worked with or consulted for the United States Geological Survey, Water Resources Division in countries like Peru, Senegal, Guinea, Australia, Greece, Great Britain, Canada and South Africa.

While in Ghana, he would visit some mining communities including the Wassa District in the Western Region to acquaint himself with developments in mining areas, the statement said
