Kumasi, May 09, GNA – The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) has initiated a project under which information and education on reproductive and sexual health, especially HIV/AIDS, is passed on to inmates of the Kumasi Central Prisons and the officers. Mrs Elsie Ayeh, Zonal Manager of the Middle Zone of the PPAG, said the project, which is funded by the Japanese Trust Fund, also offers inmates and the officers the opportunity to undertake voluntary counselling and testing.
She said this to the GNA after the PPAG donated drugs worth nine million cedis to the Kumasi Central Prisons.
Mrs Ayeh said since commencement of the project a year ago, 130 inmates have undergone voluntary counselling and testing. Eight of the inmates have also been trained as peer educators. Mrs Ayeh noted that the project had impacted positively on the health of inmates and that it is the hope of the PPAG to extend the project to other prisons in the Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo and the Northern regions, which is the Middle Zone of the PPAG.
