More Togo refugees arrive in Hohoe district

Hohoe, May 6, GNA – The official number of Togolese refugees crossing into the Hohoe District has jumped to 2,651 from the 694 recorded barely a week ago, the office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Friday.

Mr. Ben Asimenu, Hohoe District Director of NADMO told the GNA that the refugees had been arriving in batches, with majority of them claiming to be members of the Togolese opposition groups. While some were putting up with relatives, a greater number of them have pitched camp in school buildings and other open places. Mr Asimenu said NADMO was “mopping up” the refugee registration process while Police and Immigration officials were screening them for arms.

He said some of the refugees arrived with minor injuries, including a man with a compound fracture on the right arm and that they were receiving medical treatment.

He commended Togbe Agboka VI, Paramount Chief of the Leklebi Traditional Area, for helping to accommodate the refugees in the community.

Mr Asimenu called for help from relief agencies to help cater for the refugees, especially in the provision of potable water and foodstuff.
