Hit-and-run driver granted 10 million-cedi bail

Kumasi, May 05, GNA – A Kumasi circuit court has granted a 10 million-cedi bail to a driver who knocked down two persons killing one and bolting under cover of darkness.

Nelson Kwame pleaded guilty to knocking down the surviving victim but denied knocking down the deceased and would re-appear on June 7. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Agnes Dinkyini told the court that on January 31 the accused, who was driving a taxicab, knocked down 22-year-old Joseph Awolevor and sped off.

The victim was pronounced dead on reaching Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Nelson again knocked down a 40-year-old woman whose name was given as Afua Jemima and failed to stop. A Good Samaritan took the victim to the KATH where she was treated and discharged. A report of both accidents was made to the police and four days later his car owner handed him over to the police.
