EP Church to raise funds for university

Ho, May 03, GNA – Mr Kofi Dzamesi, the Volta Regional Minister, has promised to liaise with stakeholders in education, including district assemblies, to ensure that plans for the E.P. Church University were realised as soon as possible.

He said a university by the E.P. Church, which is a major agent of development in the region, was in the interest of all and needed to be supported.

Mr Dzamesi was reacting to concerns raised by Rev Lawrence Mesiwotso, Parish Pastor of the Ho-Kpodzi E.P. Church, last Sunday that the process for the establishment of the university was too slow. Rev. Mesiwotso told the special joint service of workers and the usual congregation to mark May Day in the Volta Region at the Dela Cathedral that though the idea for an E.P. University was mooted in 1997, other churches who conceived the idea of a university much later had opened theirs.

This year’s May Day was celebrated alongside a bi-annual special harvest of the church towards the proposed university. Mr Martin Gikunu, a retired educationist, said in the near future many qualified people might not have the opportunity to attend the public universities even if the quota system was applied. He said all members of the church are expected to pay special levy of 20,000 cedis each a year for five years towards the establishment of the university.

All congregations are also tasked to organise fund-raising programmes twice a year towards the project.
